Wouldn't you know it, they're doing some electrical work in our neighborhood and power's been shut off in our building. We'll be off the air for a bit this afternoon, but the good news is the WPKN Archives are still available. This is a great time to catch up on some of those shows you missed recently.

John Trudell is an acclaimed poet, national recording artist, actor and activist whose international following reflects the universal language of his words, work and message. Trudell (Santee Sioux) was a spokesperson for the Indian of All Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island from 1969 to 1971. He then worked with the American Indian Movement (AIM), serving as Chairman of AIM from 1973 to 1979. In February of 1979, a fire of unknown origin killed Trudell's wife, three children and mother-in-law. Kehaulani Kauanui, WESU) What are the origins of the Thanksgiving holiday in the US? Some Americans commemorate a harvest feast celebrated in 1621 at Plymouth between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims. Then, there is the 1637 proclamation by Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop, who claimed the first official "a Day of Thanksgiving" to celebrate the colonists who massacred the Pequots at Mystic, Connecticut. These are two very different occasions, one an indigenous feast, and the other a white settler celebration of a genocidal campaign. How are these different narratives alternately celebrated and erased? How was the creation of Thanksgiving as a national holiday a way of solidifying American national identity? WPKN To Resume Broadcasting Free Speech Radio News

After careful consideration of WPKN staff and listener opinions concerning the recent decision to replace Free Speech Radio News with a locally produced nightly newscast, we have decided to reinstate Free Speech Radio News as of today, Wednesday, July 18. Our thanks go to the volunteers who helped launch the locally produced newscast over the past two evenings as well as those who had signed up for subsequent broadcasts. Our thanks also go to our listeners who engaged the station in a dialogue on this issue. It is good to know that so many people are so passionate about our radio station.
