We are pleased to present the first in a series of programs called "Immigrant Voices." Listeners will hear original oral history interviews with elderly Italian Americans who tell their stories about life experiences in the rural farmlands of Italy; their arduous cross-Atlantic journeys by ship; their religious and spiritual practices in the new world; and their gradual assimilation into the American mainstream on the production lines of factory floors, in the sweatshops of the needle trades, as political leaders, and as soldiers. Folk music from the various regions of Italy will also be played to accompany the story of the Italian immigrant journey from the old world to the new. The program will open the discussion of immigration, dislocation and assimilation to include the voices of other ethnicities by call-ins and special guests who will appear on the program from time to time with their unique stories.
