History Counts
WPKN in the press
It's a freezing Wednesday afternoon, with the wind off Long Island Sound in the South End of Bridgeport blowing like needles, when longtime cable public access show host Dolly Curtis walks into the studios of WPKN-FM, a block from Seaside Park.Phil Bowler, the jazz disc jockey who is on the air at the community-supported non-commercial station when Curtis walks in, tells his listeners just how cold it really is.
"The hawk is flying. It's going to be bone chilling tonight," Bowler intones in his resonant voice.
Cliff Furnald host of WPKN's Live From...Where? series is back for the 2008 season kicking off live radio broadcast shows from the Kasbah. This Sunday come and enjoy what WPKN programmer and public relations guru David Golden and Furnald call a living room experience as you munch on pastry and enjoy the acoustic, sound system-free listening experience of Stacy Phillips and Paul Howard. In its fourth coming at this restaurant, the brunch and live music show is what Furnald says is, "the future of public radio." But from the WPKN studio, Golden comments, "I enjoy it because doing live music broadcasts really goes back to the golden age of radio." The future is the past?Read it all.
