2:30 p.m. - Art Hanson “When one door closes, another opens” might be a clichĂ©, but don’t tell that to fiddle player and vocalist Elana James. When the band she’d worked with for nearly a decade (Hot Club of Cowtown) dissolved, Elana was invited to join Bob Dylan’s band, and what she learned touring with a legend led to the February release of her solo debut, “Elana James.” Elana James along with guitarist Whit Smith and bassist Beau Sample will be performing live on WPKN at 2:30 pm on Friday, March 30th, hosted by Art Hanson. Elana’s band will be playing at CafĂ© Nine in New Haven, later that night at 9:00 pm. Technorati tags: , , , , ,

Mark Benjamin, National Correspondent for Salon.com discusses the split between the Bush administration and members of the US Military over torture, focusing on his explosive reports about the APA, the American Psychological Association. In his July 26, 2006 story, "Psychological Warfare," Benjamin wrote that the 150,000-member American Psychological Association is facing an internal revolt over its year-old policy that condones the participation of psychologists in the interrogations of prisoners during the Bush administration' s "war on terror." Mark Benjamin looks at current events such as the Military Commission hearing for David Hicks that took place March 26th and discusses the concept of accountability. Technorati tags: , , , , ,

El Capitan and the Corporal

4:00 p.m. - El Capitan and the Corporal We continue a series of broadcasts of classic radio plays by the legendary Norman Corwin with “El Capitan and the Corporal”, a romance, a travel story, and a wartime memory. So many people traveled by train during World War II that train-travel recollections are a universal common denominator in our living memory of those years. Romance, sudden and unexpected, springs up between a young Army corporal and a woman he meets by chance on a cross-country trip. Corwin beautifully paints a fine, honest story of the human heart, against the strains and hopes and fears of that era. Norman Corwin is regarded as the Grand Master of American radio drama. In the 1940s he was one of the best-known personalities in America. His brilliant programs drew radio audiences of as many as sixty million people. Many of them were written, cast, rehearsed, produced, and performed live within a single week’s time. They often featured performances by some of the greatest stars of the era. Additional information about Norman Corwin’s remarkable career can be found at normancorwin.com. Technorati tags: , , ,
