Special Programs & Events Newsletter

WPKN: Outspoken. Outrageous. Outstanding.
Week of January 8, 2006 Remember: your continuing support year-round helps us limit the amount of on-air fundraising we need to do. Please consider signing up online to make an automatic, monthly donation to support our musical, social and cultural programming. Become a constant supporter of independent, non-conformist, community radio at: http://www.wpkn.org/pledge. From all of the station's volunteers and staff, thanks for listening! ---------------------------------- This week on the air at 89.5 and 88.7 FM: Sunday, January 15 2:00 PM Live from the Pequot Library in Southport, CT. Live music and interviews with blues artist Mark Naftalin and his special guests Chance Brown and Guy Clark. In addition, you will learn about the unique history of a venerable cultural institution that has been presenting performances in their lovely auditorium for over a century. Come to the library for a day of music and a book sale from 1:00 to 5:00 PM or tune in on the radio. 10:00 PM Who's lurking in your computer? There's a growing threat to your personal computer by aggressive marketing, spam, hackers and commercialism of the internet. It's a dilemma that faces everyone. We're exploring this issue with Arlan Biesecker, a writer computer security expert who can explain how you are at risk and offer some solutions. Monday, January 16 4:00 PM Songwriter and guitarist Liam Bailey will perform live in the studio. Liam says "If I'm playing with bluegrass people, I'll tell them that I'm mainly a jazz player; if I'm playing with jazz people, I'll tell them that I'm mainly a bluegrass player and if I'm playing with rock people, I'll tell them I'm mainly a bluegrass and jazz player. I want them to know that I'm diverse. I want to play in every style I hear." You can listen, too. 8:00 PM Counterpoint

This is a participatory event and you are invited to come and join voices at our living room performance space in Bridgeport or at home in your living room. Future concerts include Brian Dewan (zitherist and composer, builder and player of electronic instruments, February 15, 2006) and Le Nozze di Carlo (avant-global cafe musique, March 15). ----------------------------- Please pass this newsletter on to your friends and let them know about WPKN and WPKM.
