David Chevan's Yizkor Project

11:00 a.m. - David Golden, Morning Maniac Music Bassist & composer David Chevan will join us to discuss tomorrow's performance of his composition Yizkor. On Monday, April 16 at 4:00 p.m., SCSU will host the debut performance of “YIZKOR: Music of Memory and Mourning,” a song cycle in the jazz idiom by composer and bassist David Chevan of the SCSU Music Department. The event is set to coincide with the annual day of remembrance for victims of the Holocaust. Chevan’s work consists of six musical settings of psalms, texts and prayers commonly associated with “Yizkor,” an age-old Jewish religious service held in memory of the souls of the departed. The pieces will be performed by cantorMartin Levson and the members of “The Afro-Semitic Experience,” a jazz ensemble founded by Chevan that unites Jewish and African-American musical traditions. The work has been designed to allow for the personal interpretations of Yizkor by the musicians in the group. Technorati tags: , , , , ,
