This in-depth look at the civil rights movement goes to the places where pioneers of the movement marched, sat-in at lunch counters, gathered in churches; where they spoke, taught, and organized; where they were arrested, where they lost their lives, and where they triumphed.11:30 a.m. - We speak to Cornelia Read, the acclaimed author of A Field of Darkness.
[Ms. Read] has written another compelling novel, The Crazy School, featuring the acerbic and memorable voice of ex-debutante Madeline Dare. Madeline has finally escaped rust-belt Syracuse, New York, for the lush Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts. After her husband's job offer falls through, Maddie signs on as a teacher at the Santangelo Academy, a boarding school for disturbed teenagers.11:50 a.m. - Felicia Sullivan discusses her memoir The Sky Isn't Visible From Here. Kirkus reviews says; Sullivans bracing, pared-to-the-bone prose evokes compassion by being impressively free of the narcissistic self-worship that so often infects books of this stripe. 12 noon - In studio guest Elliott Meyer discusses his recent publishing project. It is called Thespist: The 2008 Actors Ultimate Resource Guide. This pocket-sized planning tool, includes discounts to a variety of resources for the New York actor. 1:00 p.m. - Rebroadcast of a program recorded at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs: The New American Story with Bill Bradley
"What will it take to make America better and stronger? We can solve such problems as health insurance and our addiction to oil," says Senator Bill Bradley. "But first, politicians must tell the American people some hard truths."This event was the first time in the almost 100 years of the Carnegie Council's history to broadcast an invitation only event live on radio.
