May Day New Haven

4:00 p.m. - Walter Wagoner A radio documentary of the events beginning on May Day, 1970, when twelve thousand Black Panthers and their supporters arrived in New Haven individually and in organized groups. They were housed and fed by community organizations and Yale students in dormitories, and met en masse on the New Haven Green across the street from the Courthouse to hear protest speakers including Jean Genet, Benjamin Spock, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and Tom Hayden. Bombers exploded two devices in the Yale hockey rink, and protestors confronted National Guardsmen who responded by tear gassing the demonstrators. Produced in 1970 by Walter Wagoner and the staff of WYBC-FM news. Technorati tags: ,
