6:45 PM - Jim Motavalli interviews Julia Scheeres and Jerry Douglas
  • Julia Scheeres, author of the book Jesus Land, will talk about her travails growing up in a Bible-thumping fundamentalist household, and of being exiled to a remote Christian camp (Escuela Caribe in the Dominican Republic)with her two adopted African-American brothers.
  • At 9:00 PM An interview with dobro master (the Coltrane of the instrument) and Union Station member Jerry Douglas, talking about his jazz leanings and his new album, Best Kept Secret, which contains a Weather Report cover. (That might make him the Wayne Shorter of the instrument.)

Wednesday, October 12 7 AM - Fela Special From 7 AM to 2 PM Ebong Udoma will present a seven-hour special on Fela Anikulapo Kuti in commemoration of his birthday. It will feature not only the music of Fela but also the Afrobeat genre he pioneered. There will also be a special focus on his son Femi Anikulapo Kuti and his new DVD/CD "Live at the New African Shrine." Special premiums will also be available during the fundraising.

3:15 PM - Interview with pianist Harold Mabern Piano great Harold Mabern will be Phil Bowler's guest on Jazz Adventures. This will be his first appearance on the show. Mr. Mabern, a noted composer and educator, has performed and in some cases, recorded with: Jimmy Forrest, Lionel Hampton, the Jazztet, Donald Byrd, Miles Davis, J.J. Johnson (1963-1965), Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Wes Montgomery, Joe Williams, and Sarah Vaughan. He will be performing with The George Coleman Quartet this Saturday night at 8 PM in Danbury, CT as part of the Wooster Jazz Concert Series.

9:00 PM - Cosmic Jibaros concert Cosmic Jibaros, recorded at WPKN's studios on October 1st. This band draws Latin and non-Latin audiences to dance to their highly rhythmic, party-starting sounds -- "but we still have traditional [Latin] elements and the salsero people come in, and they get it."

Saturday, October 15

7:30 PM - Tribal Drum Circle - Live The 15th WPKN/Quest Tribal Drum Circle will take place across the hall from our studios. Come join WPKN programmers and listeners in an exuberant celebration of life, freedom, and the power of our community. Our joyous noise will inspire support for WPKN. We gather for snacks around 7 (contributions welcome) and go on the air at 7:30. The first hour includes fundraising, and then pure percussion will follow. 10:00 PM - Electronic Music Night with Jeff Winner Raymond Scott was a popular bandleader, composer and pianist of the 1930's & 40's. He also worked with Carl Stalling on countless cartoons. Unknown to many was the fact that Scott pioneered electronic music technology. He invented the sequencer and patented many electronic music devices. Jeff Winner is the curator of the Raymond Scott Archive and is going to talk about Scott's fascinating life and work with electronic music. "Raymond Scott is arguably the most well-known and influential unknown composer since the 16th-Century." - Steve Schneider, author
