noted race car driver whose career spanned 18 years and included such races as the 1951 Argentine Grand Prix, 1955 Mille Miglia, Dunrod Tourist Trophy, and Sebring endurance race as well as numerous lesser races. he also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times, finishing as high as third. Fitch also served as the first manager for Chevrolet's Corvette racing team, and the first general manager of the Lime Rock Park race track. Fitch emulated his ancestor, John Fitch who invented the steamship, by inventing many safety innovations for the race track and the highway.

White Rose Political Calendar starting September 28


Welcome to this week’s edition of the White Rose Political Calendar. The calendar takes its name from the White Rose, a resistance group in Nazi Germany that worked to educate and organize opposition to the horrifying agenda of the Third Reich.

In the spirit of the White Rose, WPKN and WPKM offer their weekly Political Calendar in order to give voice to the struggles for political, social, economic and environmental justice.

A Rally to support real health care reform and to support the public option will be held  in Shirley, New York.
Join members of the South Country Peace Group on Wednesday, September 30 from 4:00-5:00 PM at the intersection of William Floyd Parkway and Montauk Highway in Shirley (near Pathmark Shopping Ctr)

The NATIONAL SOLAR TOUR and GREEN BUILDINGS OPEN HOUSE comes to  LONG ISLAND. It’s being coordinated locally by Renewable Energy Long Island (RELI) and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at several sites around Long Island.
The National Solar Tour is considered the largest public renewable energy education event in the world. It is a self-guided tour of homes, businesses and other buildings with solar features including passive solar design, solar hot water and solar-electric generating systems. The Solar Tour is an excellent way to experience first-hand that solar energy really works on Long Island. You can learn about the benefits of solar and other forms of renewable energy, watch electric meters run backwards, see the actual savings on utility bills, and talk to the people who own these systems.

 On Saturday, October 3, TERRA VERDE, a celebratory eco-party will take place at Vaiuso’s Nursery, 75 Hosley Ave in Branford from 6:00-8:00pm. Jamie Burnett will beautifully illuminate the greenhouses, visible from I-95, with energy efficient LED lighting, La Cuisine will cater with a light appetizer selection of organic and local produce. Local and organic wine and beer will be served. Many local green and natural living businesses will be represented with an offering of their products. Proceeds will support Branford Luminata, a multi-media light and sound event on the Branford Green highlighting the rich history of Branford.

On Sunday Oct. 4 at 2 p.m., Rally to Abolish the Death Penalty in CT at the Capitol building, Hartford.

This spring a bill to abolish the death penalty passed both chambers of the Connecticut General Assembly, but Governor Rell vetoed it. Rally Speakers will include Lorry Post (the head of Murder Victims' Families for Reconciliation) whose daughter was murdered and who helped lead New Jersey to repeal of the death penalty in 2007, and Walter Everett, a Methodist minister who lost his son to murder.

The rally is Co-sponsored by 13 groups supporting abolition of the death penalty, including the ACLU, Amnesty International, and the Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty. A bus will be available to take people from New Haven to Hartford, leaving from the Saint Thomas More Catholic Center and Chapel at 268 Park Street  no later than 12:30 p.m. You can reserve a seat on the bus when you RSVP online at: cnadp.org/rsvp.php
