Live from...Ridgefield?
Friday, March 17, 8:30 p.m.
Central Asian folk music and throat singing with the ensemble ALASH from Tuva at The Enchanted Garden Conservatory of the Arts in Ridgefield, CT--and broadcast live on WPKN and WPKM Radio.
The ALASH ensemble is made up of recent graduates of the Kyzyl Arts College, in the basement of which they formed the ensemble from their first years. Beginning as 'Changy-Haya' they are among the first of the post-Soviet generation to display brilliance in Tuvan traditional music enhanced by subtle and knowing acquaintance with the precepts of western music. The result is thoroughly mesmerizing. The Alash ensemble has gone on to win numerous awards in festivals and competitions throughout Russia, Central Asia, and Eastern and Western Europe. In addition, all of the members of Alash work in the Tuvan National Orchestra, an experimental traditional music orchestra under the direction of Ayana Mongush and management of Radik Tiulush.
Artistic Director Kongar-ool Ondar is well known in the US, being featured in the film Genghis Blues and having performed in the Rose Parade in California multiple times, is a former member of Tuvan parliament and is an honored artist of the Russian Federation, and people's "Khoomeizhi" of the Republic of Tuva. Kongar-ool's tireless passion for music has brought the sounds of Tuva to the ears of many westerners; however more importantly he is the leading champion for traditional music within Tuva itself. Two of his students, Ayan-ool and Bady-Dorzhu, are in the ensemble Alash.
